“The Shadow self’

Photograph (30.5 x 30.5 cm)

'The shadow self' is a term coined by psychologist Carl G.
Jung in reference to the darker aspects of one’s personality of which one is
often unaware. In order to become more conscious, in efforts towards self-actualization,
one must try and face one’s shadows. This process requires effort and though
difficult it is through self-awareness and acceptance of all aspects of oneself
that one can initiate true change. Although the face is hidden in the shadows, a
mental struggle is portrayed through subtle us of body language.

'There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no
matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become
enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness
conscious.'

Carl G. Jung, “The Philosophical Tree” (1945).
